Then the Type 002 CNS Shandong was built, an enlarged and improved version of the Liaoning, which although more capable than its predecessor, wasn’t that different.Īlthough these ships served China to make its first experiences as a true «blue water» navy, conducting air operations within a naval task force centered on the aircraft carrier, their design without catapults significantly limited the maximum take-off weight of the J-15 and restricted the variety of its embarked air group.
